Southover Foods Caters For The Veganuary Challenge And Beyond

Southover Foods caters for the Veganuary challenge and beyond

As we enter a new decade veganism continues to rise, the trend is becoming ever popular helped by an increasing number of celebrity influencers, climate protests and vegan restaurants.

The ideology is spurred on by the annual ‘Veganuary’ campaign which saw 1.3 million people (1) give up animal products in the UK in the first month of the year in 2019 – that’s 4.7% of the total UK population. The challenge is relatively new to the January rituals, launching in 2014, but is becoming increasingly popular, in fact the way it’s going it may soon outgrow the booze-free ‘Dry January’ campaign.

A vegan diet involves cutting out animal products like meat, fish, dairy and eggs. The reasons people choose to go Vegan are a concern for animal welfare, along with a concern for the environment and health reasons.

The Vegan Society says that veganism is ‘a lifestyle that avoids all animal foods such as meat, dairy, eggs, honey, animal-derived products like leather and any products tested on animals. Some of the benefits of going Vegan include better health and sleep, weight loss, lower blood pressure and cancer, lower risk of diabetes Type 2, lower risk of heart disease and it’s environmentally friendly.

According to research conducted by the Vegan Society in 2018, around 600,000 people identified as vegans in the UK. In the same year there were £740m estimated sales of meat-free foods, according to market researchers Mintel, which is up from £539m only three years ago.
